Yahoo sport writer, Jeff Passan, is 100% against it. I think it could be used on a very limited basis; i.e. homerun balls (fair or foul). Bud Selig is also said to be against it. What would it do to the length of the game, with the game as slow as it is...

Passan brings up some interesting points:

I think the decision of whether a ball is fair or foul - in the case of a disputed homer - is a fair item for replay. It's not a knock on the umpires, but those calls can be tough to make when they happen as quickly as they do.

Other than that, though, I don't like the idea of replay in baseball. Sure, umpires make occasional bad and questionable calls on other plays (safe/out calls), but I don't think it happens as often as we sometimes think. I'm also not sure that replay would make a difference on many of those calls, because they're likely to often be inconclusive, like many calls in the NFL.

I'm very wary of replay because I've seen how ineffective it can be in the NFL. For every one they rule on properly, there are several that just leave me scratching my head. I don't want to see baseball go through those same pains.

Baseball is a great sport, with umpires that generally do an outstanding job. I'd hate to see their role reduced, or called into question, on a regular basis. If we're going to start using replay for many cases, why not just cut out the umpires and make all the calls from upstairs?

Mixed feelings. Glad that they're making an attempt to upgrade the challenge (while rather of a "purist" I consider that the thought of claiming that umpire errors is "side of the sport" is ridiculous if you'll repair it) however no longer truly pleased with the approach they'll use. I could select that they rather conveniently upload a 5th umpire to each and every group and feature them truthfully IN the ballpark. And permit THEM come to a decision if a play must be reviewed. I hate the thought of demanding situations - for one I hate to peer the quantity of experiences constrained by any means. I additionally could query if it probably feasible for a supervisor to control the venture process. For illustration - residence group has a 10 run lead within the best of the 5th and it appears like a typhoon is coming. Perhaps the traveling supervisor makes use of his appeals in an try to sluggish down the sport in hopes that the rain could come earlier than the sport used to be legitimate? Or might a supervisor enchantment performs to deliver a reliever extra time to hot up? And what if an ump makes a REALLY unhealthy name as soon as the appeals are used? Do you simply permit it slide or do you real desire to be certain the calls are correct.

I'm thankful for instant replay because if you miss something it's there for you. Sometimes it can get annoying, especially when someone on the other team hits a home run and they keep on replaying it. But of course, that doesn't happen very much with the Cardinals.

It's going to make a long game even longer. There are 4 umpires that can get a call right, most of the time.

I think in some ways it's a good thing, because umps don't always get the calls right, especially home run calls. But then again, it could have it's downfalls. We shall see. I think they should have a trial season with it & see how that goes before they make any permanent decisions.

It is the only true sport left. Human error has always been a part of baseball. I mean, are they going to review each pitch? Some umps have a strange strike zone. No instant replay for anything.

I think for some calls they should use it but for all the judgement calls no, the human element is part of this game more than other pro sports. And the players, coaches umpires, all know this.

Baseball should use instant replay because it would make umpires get a questionable call correct

i think the game is long..but to me to add a couple of minutes to a game to make sure a call was right would be well worth it

id rather prevent a miscall in a big situation (see: jeter hr 96 alcs) than rush to speed up the game
