Isn't this song cheesy? Basically, it's Billy Joel mentioning everything that happened in the 20th century.

And why do all cheesy songs mention fire?

Cheesy, no. Odd, yes. But, as a student of history, Joel certainly wasn't going out of his comfort zone.

I personally love the song.

No he was mentioning everything that happened during the baby-boom generation up until the song was written.

As for cheesy, not really, I can think of a lot more cheesy songs (anything from the late 70s).

I don't know about cheesiest but it most assuredly qualifies for the most stupid. God, I hated that song with a passion. I think the word fire should be prohibited from use in any song!

To me it tries to blame all of the worlds problems on our ancestors: Global Warming, Welfare Families, Drug addicts, Terrorism. All these problems ARE NOT this generations fault. We didn't start the fire, you put it out!

And yet I still like the song.

if not THE cheesiest, it's got to be in the top five, yeah.

I think you may be onto something with the fire theory.
