U2 OF COURSE!!! Green day's music sounds all the same, that guy Billy joe armstrong just fiddles around with the power chords, U2s music all sound different, edge is great and U2 are legend, The are hall of famers, and the variety of music they produced is amazing, many other bands are inspired by them. As for greenday, its like they play the same song with just different patterns, BORING PREDICTABLE ORIGINAL.

While I really like Green Day and think they have some outstanding songs, and obviously are influenced by The Clash, one of the most underrated bands ever...U2 is the greatest band ever. Four guys sticking together for over 20 years and they've only gotten BETTER. No ONE has EVER done that. Not The Beatles. Not The Stones. There will never be another U2. It just won't happen. The four same guys who all know and enjoy their roles, they complement each other so well. The Edge from the beginning has been an outstanding guitarist with his unique delay, reverb approach and isn't afraid of the effects pedal. Bono has the greatest voice I've ever heard and can sing rock, jazz, with Sinatra, with rappers and he's become an outstanding writer and knows how to make people inspired to actually do something worthwhile, yet is willing to make fun of himself and Bono gets unfair criticism sometimes for caring too much, people think he's doing the Africa thing for his ego, no way, he's done too much work and put way too much energy into it...he cares. Larry Mullen is definitely one of the greatest drummers ever, not afraid of the drum machines either and has the "no BS" personality that a group with someone like Bono in it needs. And of course Adam Clayton is the coolest looking bassplayer in the world. Sure, there's other bassplayers who could do what Adam does, but no one would be able to have the stage presence like Adam, U2 is not U2 without Adam on the bass. And he has definitely improved into an excellent bassplayer over the years. I think I heard he was the most supportive member in the band, too.
The most exciting thing about U2 is that they keep going and keep surprising people. I've seen them live about ten times. I can't wait to see them again.

Green Day is much better.
But if you can't decide, you should listen to "The Saints Are Coming", it is an album written by Billie Joe Armstrong, and the U2 songwriters

You're absolutely right! I've been on this planet long enough to see a string of Green Days by different names. I thought the same thing about Pearl Jam, and they faded in to the woodwork still playing that one song with many titles. I see Green Day going the same way. I've also been around long enough to remember seeing that first U2 video - "Gloria" - and think "Wow, this is such an awesome new sound." They've only dissappointed me once, with Zooropa, but everyone has at least one embarrasing moment in their lives so I've forgiven them.

I agree, sort of
Green Day are just another post punk pop band clinging to some dead Ramones esque sound
thats what I thought until American Idiot
...it looks like Green Day are finally finding their sound instead of just playing the same old bloody power cords in different ways
U2 on the other hand
already have their sound
and although a lot of their sound is special effects
their songs are still as great as ever
but maybe unappreciated nowadays
I think U2 definatly are better, they're icons
...but Green Day could sneak up on them in the years to come, if they start writing original songs like U2
