It's an ego trip. He gets the thrill and gratification of non-committal sex as well as the egoism of being found attractive. I disagree with such behavior on all levels, but it seems that they do it, and realize that it means "nothing" and still want the secure relationship they have at home.
I'm surprised you took him back, you must be very forgiving.

Truth is, males of the species are not truly monogamous, to believe that we are is both foolish and unrealistic. We all want to be in that kind of relationship and with work we can, but some men just occasionally enjoy a different flavour. I know it may not be nice to say it but you did ask.
As for taking him back, well only you can decide if you can forgive, but remember, each of us has our own view of what monogamous is.
