I just started working for this new company and everything is sooo disorganized. I'm basically starting from scratch. But the company has been up and running for 3 years!!! So that's three years of paper work that I have to get straight from square one.....

Depends on what you are filing...I was in a very similar situation when I started my job a little over a year ago. I am still trying to get things in order. She (the girl before me) had all of our vendor payments bunched together in a folder for each month--making it very difficult and time-consuming to try and go back to find something. I have set up colored files for all of our vendors and customers. The vendors, for example, are in grey folders and the customers are green, payroll is yellow, etc... Then, of course, they are alphabatized from there. I store the older files, in boxes out in our warehouse so it doesn't get too cluttered. Hopefully this helps a little.

It kind of depends on what your company does. I would start out by reviewing the files (not necessarily what is in them) and see what the most common theme is and start the organization process from there. It will be a little time consuming trying to figure out what will work best.
For example..I work for an HVAC (air conditioning) contractor. The most common theme is the builder so that is on the drawer label. The subdivisions are on the major tabs inside the drawer. Each job folder is filed in the proper drawer grouped by street name and then ordered by numerical address.

Go to disusa.com, and look at scanning all your paperwork and labeling it all electronically. I purchased a system for our construction firm, and life has been much simpler. The investment may seem high, but it is worth it in the long run by far. I believe they offer a lease to own plan. Tell them JC in Cape Girardeau sent you. You will no longer have to file the paperwork. Federal Government uses the same system in some of it's areas. The system creates pdf format files. NO MORE FILING FOR YOU.
