Does progress need to be shared somehow, in order for it to be considered as such?

It would depend on several things, such as who gets to decide what is 'progress,' and what is not. This is a really large question, and I've given a very small answer.

There's always the idea that a deed well done is its own reward. Progress is progress, though, it happens. Everything has to be observed to happen, though, like Shroedinger's cat.
