The land was divided into many tribal nations that did not correspond with the way the land is divided today.

The Europeans called all of the western hemisphere America, named after Americus Vespucci who was an early explorer before the Pilgrims. The native people in America called it home.

America, Americas, It was named long before those Pilgrims.
An Italian map maker so they say Americas was his name and they named it after him for drawing the maps to the new lands across the oceans. But look it up www.history.com and find the names that the Natives called their areas. Like what did they call manhatten?

Still called America. America was named after the italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who originally mapped a large portion of the continent.

To the amerindians it was known as The Great Turtle. Sorry I don't know the native word for it. Maybe another responder would know.
