I have it on great authority it is a place of great historical interest, whether a wee one of 6 would appreciate it or not will depend on his interests, so I would

a. look at websites and see what the weather is like when you are there sun, sea and sand for a wee one is not too bad for 6-7 days

b. have plan b - visit castles and fortifications etc as a back up for rainy days - have treasure hunts and the like

c. think the grub is not bad as they cater for a lot of exiled Brits and Brits "on tour" my maxim is "if locals eat in it, then it can't be bad" prices will be reasonable

just enjoy, good luck

Malta is a lovely place to go! I've been there so many times. There's a lovely beach in Melliha which is really shallow really far out so kids can play in the sea without fear. There are a lot of sightseeing things to do. Do take him to the blue grotto which is a boat ride you can get which takes you into all these cool caves where the water is so blue its beautiful. If you stay nearer to Buggiba there are quite a few things to do there for kids. Meal prices are not that bad at all, my parents usually take us out for a three course meal and for 5 of us it comes to around £60 - £80. You can also get huge Calzone pizzas the size of your plate for £3.00, it just depends where u eat really. There's always MacDonalds as well. I think Malta is lovely, if its your fist time, take some tours which you can book for quite a cheap price.

We went to Malta years ago, when I was 14 and my brothers were 12. We found plenty to do and had a great time. It's become a lot more touristy since then, so I would imagine there are lots more things to do. Meals in restaurants are cheaper than over here, not sure exactly how much because my parents were paying, but I remember them saying that it was a bargain! Really delicious food as well!

I love Malta and the Maltese (they are NOT called Maltesers!). They love the English and, like all Catholics with large extended families, they just love children - your son will be treated like a VIP! Visit the Blue Lagoon, of course. Rent the DVD of the film "Popeye" with Robin Williams & Shelley Duvall before you go and you can then visit the village they built as a set. Take a ride (or two) on the rickety old orange buses, all with shrines to the Virgin Mary. Eating out is almost criminally cheap, especially if you try some Maltese things - pastizzi (like samosas) - imqaret (deep-fried date parcels) - lampuki/dorada, a type of big-boned meaty local fish, if in season. If you want someone to carry your cases ... :-)
