Many bands and artists give away free tracks to promote their music, either on their official websites or on their MySpace profiles. You're not going to get whole albums this way, but it's a good place to start if you want to discover new music.

Depending on what type of music you're looking for, you might find free tracks available from the artist's record label. However, this is more common with indie labels that aren't so uptight about giving away free music.

And of course there are several websites that list free MP3 downloads from any artists and labels all over the world.

Best to avoid free sites, there's a high chance you'll pick up a virus. Try Iomoio, I've been using them for 3 years now and never got a virus. Songs are all in high quality bit rate so sound a lot better than the stuff you rip from Youtube. Register with the link below and get 2 free downloads to try them out.
