i own a repair shop,and the egr system takes unburned gas from the exhaust system,and runs it back through the intake manifold and then attempts to re-burn it it doesn't always work well,but on most cars it does help a lot,and the system does this all the time especially under acceleration,is when it mostly works,but that's pretty much what it does ,,good luck i hope this help,s.and have a good thanks giving.
