My daughter is having trouble with fractions that are different
as 1/3 + 2/6. or 1/3 + 3/15. I know how to do it but it is really hard for me to explain it to her, anyone have a simple way or trick?

Thanks!

The key to fractions is understanding numerator and denominator
Remember this, the Denominator is DOWNSTAIRS!!
To add (or subtract) fractions the denominator(or downstairs) MUST be the same
This is ALSO very important
remember any number multiplied by 1 is still the same number
1x100=100, 1x3=3, 2.178x1=2.178
NOW this, 1 can also be any whole fraction: 5/5=1, 100/100=1, 33/33=1
get it?
so to change a fraction for adding/subtracting, multiple it by a version of 1 so that is has the same (or common denominator) as the other number you need to add
want an example? OK
1/2+1/3+/1/4=???
well what would be a GOOD COMMON DENOMINATOR?
2x3x4=24, that would work
so (1/2x12/12)=12/24
(1/3x8/8)=8/24
(1/4x6/6)=6/24
so now we have
12/24+8/24+6/24
or (12+8+6)/24
or 26/24 (which is a mixed number, a fraction greater than 1)
which is equal to 1 2/24
which can be reduced to
1 1/12
yes we could have used 12 as our common denominator as well
good luck, its hard a first but practice will make it more clear
believe it!!
If changing the fractions to a common denominator is too difficult it is time to review the times tables, if I don't know the multiples of 4,5,6,7 I cannot add 1/4+1/5+1/6+1/7

You have to make the bottom numbers the same by multiplying the whole fraction you can then add them together and simplify afterwards

eg 1/3 + 3/15 = 5/15 + 3/15

= 8/15

1/3 = 2/6
+ 2/6 = 2/6

( just get the GCF of the denominator, then divide it to the denominator, and multiply it to the numerator)

= 4/6 or 2/3 (simpliest form)

1/3 = 5/15
+ 3/15 = 3/15

= 8/15

Yes,this problem is not a new one.Every parent and teacher faces the same problem from the children. You should better tell her that 1/3 and 2/6 are both same..She should be made to understand that if both numerator and denominator are multiplied by the same number, the value does not change. So let her first convert different denominators to a single one and then do the adding.,So,1/3 +2/6 becomes 2/6+2/6 =4/6 and so on

how can I work this fraction
You are making a welding fixture and must cut down a length of steel tubing from 19 3/8 inches to 11 9/16 inches. When you cut the tubing, you will waste 1/16 inch of it because of the width of the saw cut. If the leftover piece is long enough, you will use it in another fixture. How long will this leftover piece be?

turn the fractions into decimals by dividing the top # by the bottom # ex 1/3=1 divided by 3 = .333333 the three never ends so just put a lind over top of it

There is a trick to add fractions quickly and easily.

You can't add apples and oranges together so you need to make them into an Apple-orange hybrid. Then you can just add them together.

Just multiy across the bottom to get the denominator. Then multiply diagonally and add those two numbers together to get the numerator. It easier to see it done so...
