Chalk line first - need two people, one at each end - then line tape up with chalk line that easily wipes off. Or get one of those lazer levelers.

Start from the top corner of your wall measure from the left corner or the right which ever way you are going out to were you want to start your first vertical line and mark it with a pencil. Then measure from the bottom left hand corner of your wall out the same distance as the top mark you made. mark with pencil. Then take a caulk line which you can purchase from hardware store. Hold the caulk line at the top of your mark and the put the caulk line at the bottom mark. holding the line tight. then pull the line out away from the wall about a half inch and let your line go snapping the wall with the line. This should give you a straight line. then tape for your stripe. You made need two people to hold the chaulk line.one at the top mark and the other hold it at the lower mark you made. This would be the most practical way. or use a long straight edge ruler the length of your wall.

My hubby and I did this in our nursery (two different pinks striped vertically) The only way we could make it look right was to use a laser leveler that puts a laser line on the wall where you want it and then start laying the tape down so it just touches the line. It came out beautifully.I wouldn't suggest drawing a line all the way down (or across the wall) as it might be hard to make sure those lines were completely covered later

Mark off two points on the wall and use a chalk line. Then match the tape up to the chalk line with two people pulling the tape tight. Or better yet, get a laser level and match the laser line up with a couple pencil marks on the wall. You spend less time marking the wall (less markings on the wall) and you level it at the same time. Just line the tape up with the laser line.
It's worth the $40 to get the laser level.

Definitely the only sure way to get it straight is a laser leveler. You want the kind that does a 360 degree projection around the room. Use that as your guideline to tape off. You can rent these at any hardware/equipment rental facility.

if you don't want to buy a laser line, a long string and a weight will work.
Hold the end of string at top of wall and allow weight to drop freely. Make your marks. Start taping.
