an american haunting?

I just saw an american haunting, and while I got what the movie was about.. something still confuses me.. I know that in both cases, the 'haunting' was due to abuse from the father, but who was the spirit?? Was it the girl manifesting something or what? I just want to know who the spirit is.

I remember that the haunting had something to do with the Bell Witch, which is a true story.

I think it was the girl from the past and she appeared in younger form because it was from a time when she still had her innocence.
