What do people mean when they say 'Its only me!' as they leave a voice mail or enter a room where you are?
What is the subtext to that phrase?

Someone who is so familiar and constant in your life that you know who they are at the sound of their voice and by saying "it's only me" the caller is saying, don't rush, don't hurry, no big deal but I want you to know this, help with this etc. . .
when entering a room I would say it's to prevent from startling someone and so that person knows they can keep going about their business and pay no mind to the person who just walked in.

When one uses the term "It's only me", that person does so not to startle whoever might be inside the house in the hope that they recognise their voice. I think the subtext to that would be:
"Hallo, I'm home."

For me, Shabs and Thicke are right on. If I say "its only me" entering a house, I am saying no need to set the dog loose, I am no threat. I think it carries over as a social custom on email and phone.
I have been known to leave phone messages and say "no need to call back, we can catch up later."

It's someone you know. They expect you'll recognize their voice so they don't leave a name for voice mail. When entering a room, they're letting you know they're present as not to startle or interrupt you.

Erm.....it is stating that it is not anyone important or anyone to worry about. Friend not foe etc.... It is probably said more since Harry Enfield used it as a Catchphrase in one of his series' back in the 90's. Hope that helped x

If just entering somewhere, you could say "Its only me" so as not to startle anybody who was unawares of your presents.

ha ha that sounds like me i say it all the time.when i walk into my house or someone elses or when i ring someone. when they answer i say hi it`s only me .it means nothing to worry about.

i would say it meant hat someone wanted you to be aware that they were there. i done no why they says its me, me could be anyone, but there you go.
