Sorry Smokey but you are wrong. If you have a conviction, and I had one at 14 years of age, it stays on your record at the Criminal records office for life. It is not however referred to after 7 years as this comes under the spent convictions tab under the rehabilitation of offenders act so you do not have to disclose it. If however you appear in court at a later date after the 7 years they can bring it up in court. I know this to be 100% correct. Hope it helps.

You have this criminal record for life. All is not lost as you have not bee convicted of an offence involving dishonesty. You are still then eligible for work that honesty is a paramount requirement. Some minor offences after a period o time become SPENT. You still have the record but for a lot of jobs and their applications such as insurance, you do not need to mention your convictions, even if asked. If you apply for work involving children you will have positive vetting as you would applying to security companies or banks.
Be good from now on and forget your past when you can and deal with the future. Best of luck.

I am also in canada so I may be of little more help than your friend, but yes, here you can apply for a pardon. Here it can be done on your own but it is alot easier to do so with a lawyer.
A quick search of the official UK Gov't site seems to indicate that the same system applies there.

It does stay with you for life.
In the US- you could try getting a lawyer and attempt to have it expunged, but that is costly and would depend on the offense and the District Attorney's office would have to approve it.
It would only come out on a CCH check- complete criminal history check, and those are commonly used for employment purposes.

I was done for a tax disc 'misunderstanding' about 20 years ago. When I was stopped last year, the copper asked if I'd been in trouble before. "No" I said. "What about a little trouble with a tax disc?" he said. Looks like even the most minor things stick.

Depends what it's for - most have an expiry time, though offences regarding harm to children do not.
I would think yours has probably expired - try www.homeoffice.gov.uk, there'll be something there that shoudl tell you, or a link someone you can ask anyway.

yea, it is usually cleared after so many years, so you may want to find out by calling a court or police station, otehrwise by law you still need to report the offense to jobs and stuff
