80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

I agree with the theory of the logical positivists:

Expressed in language, the question is meaningless. This is because "meaning of x" is a term in life usually conveying something regarding the consequences of x, or the significance of x, or that which should be noted regarding x, etc. So when "life" is used as "x" in the term "meaning of x", the statement becomes recursive and therefore nonsensical.

In other words, things in a person's life can have meaning (importance), but a meaning of life itself, i.e., apart from those things, can't be discerned. In this context, a person's life is said to have meaning (significance to himself and others) in the form of the events throughout his life and the results of his life in terms of achievements, a legacy, family, etc. But to say that life itself has meaning is a misuse of language, since any note of significance or consequence is relevant only in life (to those living it), rendering the statement erroneous. Language can provide a meaningful answer only when it refers to a realm within the realm of life. But this is not possible when the question reaches beyond the realm in which language exists, violating the contextual limitations of language. Such a question is broken. And the answer to a broken question is an erroneous or irrelevant answer.

...got another question???

Life is a series of activities.....it is defined by many many factors....what you choose to do with your life, how you feel about your choices, how society perceives your choices, and how your choices impact others around you. When people ask what the meaning of life is, they usually mean to ask what our purpose is in the universe, or if our existence will have mattered at all in the grand scheme of things, or if there is some sort of objective that we should be aiming for before we die....the answers, in my opinion to those questions are, in order, we are such a small part of the universe, that whatever impact we have on it will be proportionally small, whether we have mattered in the end will depend on who you ask...I will have mattered a great deal to my family, but probably not at all to a being from another planet, if such a thing exists, and finally, what we do with our lives is, until someone dictates otherwise, up to our FREE WILL.....

If you've read 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' I'd say the answer is 42. But I also believe the meaning of life is to make a difference in the world and to actually achieve something. There's no point in you being born if all you have to contribute is laying around on the sofa, mooching of the government or making other peoples life hell by being a murderer or a tyrant. I believe you have to enjoy life and give the world something back. That's the meaning of life...in my opinion.

Well, according to the The Westminister Shorter Catechism "the chief end of man is to glorify God forever." I can only image what it is like to be purposeless in the world. Without God how can we know anything. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis "if we are all just random occurances how can we trust other random occurances." Then everything whether observed or opined does not matter because truth become obsolete. Truth on any level whether science or history or faith do not exist and even the question ask becomes pointless and merely randomness.

42 is probably as close as any other.

The Bliblical answers are more in the vain of how life should
be lived rather then the meaning of life.

So, like the rest of us you will just have to wait untill the end to
find out.

The meaning of life is many different things....i am a christian and our meaning is to do all we can to honor and glorify our personal savior, Jesus Christ, and our Father in Heaven, God, and share our faith with others to win lives for God! It is becoming who you are, learning from your mistakes, doing good in hard times and helping others. Whether your saved, athiest, or any other religion, i'm sure the meaning of life is all about finding your identity; who you are and making the most of your time living here on Earth! :]]

One day when you are 80-90 years old, you want to sit back in a chair and think back on all the great things you did, without regreting anything.
Enjoying the life and don;t think about what happens after that...
