My sister said she used one for a long time with her son (he's 2 now). She had one that easily fit into her bag and it made the seat more comfortable and sanitary. I'll probably get one if I can find one that's not too bulky, or you could just leave it in the back of the car and grab a buggy outside and throw it in there. Doesn't seem too complicated, and it might entertain your kid.

We bought a shopping seat cover for our daughter. It was nice for a little while then it became a hassle to drag it everywhere, they toys on it became old to her and it never stayed in place. So they are not the best buy. When i go into the store I put her into the seat and then i rub the handle with a wet one or hand sanitizer because thats the part she touches the most. Wet one are inexspensive and kill most germs without harming the baby. However one of the best things we ever bought for our baby was a travel highchair. I hate going into resturants and the highchair they try to give is dirty or the straps are broken or they have no straps at all then you spend your whole dinner putting your baby back into the seat. We recomend the graco one it is blue and green. It is a little hard getting the strap under the seat but it also has one that goes around the back of the chair which we find suffiecent. Have a great day and enjoy your little one

Definitely get one!
We've found ours to be a wonderful piece of gear. Our daughter is 10 months old. We've been using our cart cover (we've got a floppy) since she could sit up. Ours has a pocket that we can use to keep the bare essentials on hand.
Think about the cart you're going to put your child in... people you don't know are touching the cart everyday. People who could have colds, have been touching something potentially harmful to your child or could just flat out not wash their hands after using the toilet. Then you put the baby in the seat and what happens? If your son is anything like my daughter, his mouth goes straight for the cart handle! At the very least, your son's hands are going to be touching the cart and they will, eventually, inevitably, be in his mouth! Personally, I'd rather have the cart covered with something that I can take home, throw in the washer and know where it's been.
Is it a hassle? It hasn't been one for us. Honestly, I can set up the cart cover with one hand while holding the baby with the other. Once we're outside again the baby goes into the car seat, then the groceries get loaded, then the cart cover comes out of the cart. It's not difficult *AT ALL* to set up the cart cover or to take it back off of the cart.
I think this is an invaluable piece of gear!

I love ours. We use it when we go out to dinner, too, in the high chair.
My 9 month old loves to chew on everything -- including the germy shopping cart handle and the germy high chair. So at least with the car seat cover, I know he's chewing on something clean.
Get the easiest looking one you can find. I've seen some that look like origami projects! The one we use is about the size and shape of a grocery cart seat, with 2 big holes for legs and 2 small slits for the cart seatbelts (where they exist). It also has 2 elastic-topped pockets for toys.
You might be able to find a cheaper one at a consignment store. I paid $7 for ours, took it home, washed it, and feel fine about it.

can you imagine holding your 9 month old, wrestling the seat cover on, squishing your son into the seat, shopping, going through check out, unloading the groceries, unloading and car seating your 9 month old, and then wrestleing the seat cover back off the cart before even getting in the car?
I certainly wouldnt want to do that. holding a toy or talking to your son while shopping is probably infintily easier... lol.

There's only 2 real benefits to them. They make contact with germs less likely and they cover the areas where they might get their fingers pinched. I had one and decided it was more of a hassle than anything. Opted to just use a baby blanket that we carry with us. Wrap it around the back and sides of her.
