People prefer to think in the afterlife because they are not satisfied with their current lives. Also, you must be careful about trying to get the meaning of life. Instead of spending time trying to understand something impossible (life is in constant change...Panta Rei [Heraclitus]), you should spend time on actually living and trying to make things better. Nonetheless, most people will prefer thinking about a wonderful afterlife instead of getting some courage and fixing their current lives. A pity!!!

We aren't sure of the afterlife. Religion is speculation.
Of course, some believe that it's possible to KNOW that a religion is true. Actually, I'm a part of that group. But to be perfectly pessimistic, religion is speculation (UNTIL YOU BELIEVE).
But to answer your question, we can't be sure of the afterlife until we are sure of the meaning of life.
And maybe that's why God left religion to be the way it is. If the sign were given before the trial of our faith, then our faith does not in truth exist.
Or maybe some people like to work it out backwards. Depends on what fanatic you're talking to. (ex: "If the afterlife is for making amends, then life is for...")
But before this great debate can really be answered, there must be a common belief to sprout from. Much like a mathematical proof, philosophical debate must have some given.
Good question. I love people who actually post PHILOSOPHY in said section!

Just because one has not figured out the meaning of life, which isn't nearly as important as figuring out "one's self" does not mean that there is no afterlife. Life is ever lasting. Death does not exist. We merely change form. We go through a process similar to birth, but it has nothing to do with what we imagine death to be like. We never die. Granted this is merely my opinion, but we step out of the realm of the physical and into the realm of the absolute. That is why this realm is so precious. It has that added bonus of physical being.

It's your lucky day! I'm dead and happened to be surfing the web and saw your question. The meaning of life is to live it. How can you be sure that your reality will encompass an afterlife? Mine just happened to. What did you think, 42?

Who is SURE of an afterlife? Only weak, dependent, superstitious types. Meaning of life? Only the meaning you invest in it, you make for it, you value in it--you give to it.

I know without a doubt that there is a life after this one. This one is trmporary and if you die without finding the meaning, it is a very sad thing. We are meant to worship our creator and we will live eternally with Him if we accept Him here on this earth. Read your Bible and God will reveal Himself. Even if you only study the human body, you will see that we were inticately made by a MAKER, and not by chance. I don't believe that if you happened upon a watch laying on the ground you would say" oh, look what just came out of the earth!" Well, we are so much more complicated than that watch!!. Don't be naive, and don't follow the world. The world is not of God.
