nothing is working including the blinkers, windshield wipers, the heater, or radio. i haven't checked the headlights yet, so i don't know about them. the strange thing is that when i turn the car off, everything starts working again. what could be wrong with it? it's a 2000 dodge neon, if that helps any.

Seeing as you say that when you turn the car off, everything works again, it looks like the problem is in the ignition switch itself. It's cutting out the power to these items (and their relays) when it's switched on but when it's off it's having no effect. I think if you get the switch changed it'll be fine.

I mean, if it wasn't the switch but some weird problem somewhere else, why on earth does everything work when the switch is off? Makes sense to me...

Potentially the alternator or switching relay that charges the battery.

When the car is running, extra electricity from the alternator is used to charge the battery. A relay is used to divert that extra power, and the rest of the power from the alternator runs all the car's electrical devices. When the engine is off, those devices are powered from the battery.

It sounds like instead of diverting just extra electricity, ALL the power is going to the battery (if the battery wasn't getting power, it would run down fairly quickly). The relay should be cheap to replace, so that's a place to start.

Good luck.

Like Mikey and frank f have stated. You did not get the entire tale. There is NO WAY the police or any person however the proprietor of the vehicle goes to ought to pay for damages and prefer recounted this is why. If spikes are used on a car, it was once definitely in a pursuit. This implies that the motive force is breaking the legislation for no longer pulling over. (Even if it was once the unsuitable vehicle) At this factor the motive force goes to be arrested and is committing a criminal offense. The police use spike strips to give up the car, and motive force is arrested. Any harm to the car that's prompted is the accountability of the motive force or proprietor at this factor.

It sounds like an electrical problem. I could be something as simple as a bad wire or weird connection. You really need to have someone experienced look at it -- electrical things aren't as simple to pinpoint as a bad battery cable.

it most likely is electrical. Maybe some water got into your electrical system. I would take it into a shop and get it fixed quick cus that is unsafe.
