Just because you can walk on it, doesn't mean that it's NOT broken. I had a hairline fracture in my ankle after a bad fall in the long jump pit in high school. I was walking with some pain afterwards, and hoped that it was a sprain or twist. Managed to walk to the bus and home, but could obviously tell it was different than previous twists as I had a very hard time putting weight on it. After alternating ice packs and warm packs with elevation, it still was more swollen than I had seen before. Had to go to the Doc, got an xray and verified that it was a hairline fracture. Was light enough, but still required a walking cast for 3 months.
If a cast is required, I can probably go on about the wonderful smells you'll get if you get it wet (the poor nurse almost fainted on me when she cracked mine open)
If it is just a sprain, then see above about treatment. Depending on your health care, you may want to just get it checked up and maybe get some crutches to help move around. Keeping it wrapped in an ace bandage will keep it warm with circulation - but don't keep it too tight as to cut off circulation (due to the swelling). Ice frequently and elevate as much as possible - one easy thing to use is a bag of frozen peas or corn - they're small and increase surface contact. Simply refreeze after they're thawed. . . although eating it afterwards is questionable. If things don't get better by tomorrow, I would see the doc before the weekend.
I would also recommend getting an ankle brace - preferrably one with steel rods along the sides such as McGregor brand. These are better than the ones that are like socks with elastic strips which just wrap around, although those are better than simple ankle supports - which do nothing. These can also be worn while playing sports. If on crutches or when healing, having the ankle immobilized will prevent additional accidental twistings. Your ankle will be very weak until healed, and even then, now that you have severly twisted your ankle, you have put yourself at increased risk for sprains in the future.
I played soccer religously as a kid, and twisted my ankles so much, I have very little flexibility there. I've found that the McGregor braces with the metal rods prevent twists while playing, as well as not taking away too much in terms of mobility.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

I recognize you do not desire to listen to this...however my buddy is one of these physical activities addict as of approximately two years in the past, and due to the fact that she simply randomly began move nation going for walks and cycling within the wooded area close her condo, using three days per week (horses) monitor practices three days per week, (sundays she is going for further runs and motorbike rides) with out a prior coaching earlier than that besides for infrequent runs external her as soon as per week using classes and institution monitor practices (she is one of these enthusiast...I do not see how she does it however...) she sprains her ankle(s) at least one time a month. SPRAINS NEVER HEAL COMPLETELY. her mother is a nurse and continuously reminds her of that, she wears a tensor/ace bandage, and an ankle brace, on every ankle whether or not its sprained or no longer (heavier ones for while theyre honestly sprained) given that she used to be so reckless (and she or he's correct right here as I style this lol, however she's busy ranting approximately how her horseshow used to be cancelled given that of rain lol) she ended up pressure fracturing an already sprained ankle gambling volleyball, (and she or he sprained it in the course of baseball). the one factor she will be able to do now's journey. No distance going for walks or sprinting, no cycling, simply using, given that it is the simplest factor that does not harm it. She might not be entirely healed till the top of September, and has to spend her cash that typically is going to horse stuff, on physio. This is protecting her again from the 800 m provincials. the effect sucks...it's going to heal a lot much less in the event you play...and despite the fact that she nonetheless excercised, nonetheless rode, nonetheless went to monitor meets and horseshows, she regrets it, given that the everlasting agony and affliction from braces and tensors holds her again. (she additionally has Osgood-Shlatters Disease and has to put on two kneee braces on every knee whilst going for walks and cycling) cross forward and play, simply be relatively cautious approximately whether or not or no longer you could have beforehand sprained it. notice from buddy: "I could like to mention that Jamie's being dramatic...which perhaps the wording makes it look like that, however sure I am very damage susceptible... however no agony so long as I'm dressed in the braces...however she's correct, sprains by no means heal. I roll over on my ankle, it hurts for hours or days, if I commute, identical factor. BE CAREFUL..."

Elevate it. Try your best NOT TO WALK ON IT. It's hard because you're going to get bored and have to pee, etc. But it'll heal faster it you stay off it and keep it elevated on blankets or pillows. Also, take anti-inflammatories (Ibuprofen) to ease the pain/burning sensation. DONT APPLY HEAT! It'll only make it worse. So, try to relax and do things to take your mind off the pain. Hope you feel better!

rest it. wrap something frozen, ( a bag of peas etc) in a towel and put it on your ankle... it'll reduce the swelling.
If its still bad sunday night, go to the hospital and get it checked out.
