It is a war game (similar to that of LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth) You choose an army (side) and control the troops and watch them battle.

Basically all mmorpg's are about escapism and meeting new people when you come down to it. I've played SWG for more than three years; started playing with the 14 day free trial and was immediately hooked. If you're a pretty big Star Wars fan like me than it's the game of your dreams. If you could care less and just want a cool game then it might frustrate you and you're probably better of playing WoW or World of Warcraft.

Star Wars Galaxies isn't an easy game for a newcomer, it's very technical and there's a lot of commands and the interface can be a bit overwhelming at first. My husband didn't like it, said it was too complicated for his tastes. Definitely try the free trial if you can. I've met people on there I've known for years, so you can really make long lasting friendships.

Other than that, my favorite thing to do in game is tour the galaxy. There's plenty of planets to explore; Naboo, Tattooine, Corellia are the main ones. There's also Dantooine, Dathomir, Yavin 4, Endor, Lok, Rori and Talus. Kashyyyk (Wookie Homeworld) and Mustafar (Lava moon in Ep III) can be added if you buy the expansions as well.

It's a Massively Multiplayer Online RPG, or MMORPG - a computer game where thousands of people around the world all participate at once, playing in the same online virtual world (or in this case, virtual universe since people can obtain spaceships and travel between worlds)

The idea behind SWG is that you're playing characters that could exist in Star Wars- you can be a human smuggler like Han Solo, or a Wookie, or seek to become a Jedi, or bounty hunter, Imperial officer etc. It's just like World of Warcraft or City of Heroes, except instead of a fantasy like setting Everquest and World of Warcraft, or a comic book world of superheroes and villains like City of Heroes- the setting is the Star Wars universe.
