These people who reply that it won't cost much obviously have no idea of what a head gasket repair can entail, or have lost track of labour rates and parts prices these days.

Head gasket repair will need all the gaskets, new head bolts as the old ones can't be re-used, if there isn't an obvious sign of the gasket having failed, then the head will need to be crack tested, and in any case it will be warped and need skimming flat again. There is the cost of coolant, and oil and filter change, and loads of sundries.

The MOT could cost up to £50 just for the test, let alone rectification of any faults found, and a service will cost about another £200. You are looking at £700 quid if there are no MOT faults. If the head is cracked, a new head will cost you a fortune.

The car is probably scrap as the cost of repairs is far greater than its current value, which makes it an uneconomical repair.

How long is a piece of string?

It depends on if there anything seriously wrong. Then we are talking hundreds of ££'s. However, you can fail an MOT for something as simple as a faulty brake bulb which can cost 70p+vat.

Should cost you around £200 (if not less) for everything you're getting done. It does depend on the ethical nature of the garage though, and the MOT failures.

Obviously, a main dealership charges more than an independant garage. I once paid £17 to have my tyres' air pressures checked. I thought this would be done complimentary as i was getting a service done, but no. Thanks very much Mercedes of Edinburgh.

all depends on the following

hourly rate of garage
what they find when they get the head off
cost of parts
diesel or petrol engines
what is involved eg how much other bits to be removed 1st
if it is an alloy head it may require skimming as it may have become warped. cast iron heads will generally take more abuse and this is probably less likely to require skimming.

skimming is a process which will return the head to a flat and square face.
