It is determined by which hemisphere of your brain is most dominent. By the way, left handed--dominent right brain individual, right handed--dominent left brain individual. Some people can learn to use the other hand (such as the case of amputee victims) but they can never use it as well.

Not exactly sure...but I'm a lefty and so is my brother and both of my parents. I have four sons. Two of them are identical (mirrored) twins. One is left handed, one is right handed (their hair even parts on opposite sides). I read once in a twins book that there is a very high rate of identical twins in utero (1st trimester) that result in only a singleton pregnancy....as one is absorbed or not viable and that that's where lefties come from.
