I have 2 last names, from my father then my mother. I dont want to use my fathers anymore but I cant afford a name change right now, is it okay for me to use my mothers last name and not use my fathers anyways? Is there anything that can go wrong if i apply somwhere and they want my SS# and I have a different last name?

I have 2 last names, and sometimes I use 1 or the other or both. It never causes problems for me because on my drivers license it has both last names, but on some credit cards I use 1. If they have any questions, when I show them my license they understand. My social security card has 1 last name on it, but like I said if I show my drivers license they see I have that name on there as well, if they question why I just tell them I got married! It has never prevented me from getting a loan or anything it's just kind of hard to remember which name I used.

I don't know the law nationally or in your state but just want to caution you that with all the homeland security precautions last name changes and usage has become a big issue. I would pose your questions to an attourney. A phone consultation should be free to under $30 and worth the advice just to stay out of trouble. Good luck.

as long as you are not trying to defraud anyone i believe you can apply for a ss card using your old number and your new name without cost or fear of reprisal
