(3y - 5) + (5y + 20) =135
Step 1: Rearrange
3y + 5y - 5 + 20 = 135
Step 2: Add
8y + 15 = 135
Step 3: Group the numbers on the right side of the equation
8y = 135 - 15
8y = 120
y = 15

(3y - 5) + (5y + 20) = 135
3y - 5 + 5y + 20 = 135
3y + 5y = 135 + 5 - 20
8y = 120
8y/8 = 120/8
y = 15

to check:

(3y - 5) + (5y + 20) = 135
3y - 5 + 5y + 20 = 135
3(15) - 5 + 5(15) + 20 = 135
45 - 5 + 75 + 20 = 135
135 = 135

first distribute what's inside the ().
=> 3y - 5 +5y +20 = 135

then you want to isolate the variable, which in this case happens to be y.
in order to do so you have to add 5 to both sides and subtract 20 from both sides.
=> 3y +5y = 135 + 5 - 20

Now you combine all the like terms:
=> 8y = 120

You have still not isolated y so you must now divide by 8.
=> y = 120 / 8

you can simplify this even more:
since both numbers are divisible by 8
120 / 8 = 15 and 8 / 8 = 1
you get => y = 15 / 1 which ultimately equals 15.

(3y - 5) + (5y + 20) = 135
(3y - 5) + 5y + 20 = 135 ....................open the second bracket
3y - 5 + 5y + 20 = 135.....................open all the brackets
3y + 5y - 5 + 20 = 135
3y + 5y = 135 + 5 - 20...arrange'em with same unknown
8y = 120
y = 120/8
y = 40
