Society is made up of many individuals, and that's where self esteem starts...in the individual. It begins at home, with parents who don't call their kid stupid just because they messed up. It starts with parents not allowing siblings to call each other names, teaching each family member about respect and equality. When this child is raised in a loving home that teaches these values, they have a better chance of having a healthy vision of themselves, no matter what their physical appearance is. Let's face it, everyone knows that there are some people will find fault with just about anything, mostly to prop up their own sagging self esteem. Those people are called bullies, and need to be shut down by everyone around them. Those bullies tend to grow up doing the same thing they did throughout school...put down everything and everyone, in order to make themselves feel superior. If everyone shut these people down when they were young enough to change, I think it would drastically cut down on "society" deciding what perfection is and isn't. Remember, society is you, me, and we. And that's where it starts...with you, me and outward from there. When we keep accepting what all the magazines say is best, we all lose. If we all stop supporting the advertisers of magazines like this, they'll have to change their ideas or lose money. Money talks, everything else walks. <*)))><

well, your asking two questions there. the first, how does society over rate beauty and the second is if it's responsible for low self esteem.
there is no actaul answer, just lots of theories. Society over rates beauty through the media and discourse. WHY it over rates it is a whole different story!! some people blame capitalism, some blame culture. There is no actual answer.
And yes, it is a contributing factor, among others to low self esteem and poor body image in men and women of all ages.

Naw, that is the teaching of the parents that allow a young person to even be affected by such nonsense as media. If the child places more of an interest in the appearance of a thing, they lose the essence of a thing. Was Mother Theresa a Runway Model? no, was she Beautiful? yes.
Was Mohatmas Ghandi a Playboy? no, Was he better than a playboy? yes.
Is President Clinton a Hot Bod Squeeze Toy? no
Is he a good man? yes

It's not the young girls fault..trainning come from the generation before the next and woman trainning stopped when grandparents went out and my 30 generation isn't making anytime to teach man or woman skills and why it's because they don't have any. My grandmother told me that" being a woman is the hardest job there is... always be the first to wake and the last to sleep and don't expect ANY pay"

There are more beauty magazines, filled with super skinny, young, fresh faced models than there are magazines about being the best YOU one can be.
There is no individualized sense of beauty...you either conform to this one look..skinny, Hollywood starlet type of thing, or you need to lose weight, fix your face, your hair isn't right, your style is a mess...etc etc etc.
I believe that with everyone trying to look 20, we live in a society that worships the young and berates the older. TV shows about nipping and tucking, Dr. 90210 performing breast augmentation every other day. VH1s hottest bodies, belong to the young and waif...not the strong. Plus, there are COUNTLESS numbers of mags, books, shows, etc telling you what you need to fix to LOOK better...not much about BEING better, ACTING better, BEHAVING better...or LEARNING (GOD forbid someone might want to actually learn something this day in age.)

i does not say that euro-centric is the standard of elegance- look at Naomi Campbells achievement at a variety. i think of it relatively is greater that for the duration of the west advert campaigns are centred on the ecu suited, by using greater suitable objective marketplace. in my view, I blame the way each and every of the photos of fashions and celebrities are photoshopped to lead them to look thinner, and get rid of any imperfections. This creates an unrealistically extreme conventional of elegance that's impossible to realize.
