I personally like Antonia Fraser and Alison Weir.

For Western US history, Paul Andrew Hutton and Robert M Utley.

For military history, the late Stephen E Ambrose was tops, as was Cornelius Ryan. They both specialized in the second world war.

Stay away from David Irving, he's very biased.

John Toland is excellent.

Joachim Fest is a great German historian. His bio on Hitler is very well regarded.

John Keegan is also excellent, and he's still alive. I especially recommend his The Face of Battle.
