Depends--What's your idea of "real democracy"? Is it where citizens vote for who they want to lead them? Is so, then I seem to recall a few newspapers might have had a FRIGGIN HUGE PURPLE-INKED THUMB ON THEIR FRONT PAGES after elections in Iraq. I'm not really sure what that means, though. Maybe it's just a secret club or something.

It's not realistic to expect people who know nothing of democracy (or even it's ideology) to embrace it instantly as a way of life, especially when it's so radically different from the system they've lived within for generations. It is to the Iraqi's little more than a novelty that so far has produced only bloodshed and chaos.
They will eventually fall back under the leadership of the muslim clergy, the leaders of which we cannot eliminate because of world opinion.
Our forces there are in a deadly dilemma that can only end as our Veit Nam
efforts did, in failure. Our troops are assault forces, not suited for the guerrilla tactics of an inexhaustable stream of suicide killers. We do not have, and probably CANNOT have, enough "boots on the ground" to control the violent nature of that large a population of religious fanatics.
If they are to join the world community it will be at their own evolutionary pace, and not the result of foreign occupation. No such effort has ever been successful since the ghastly genocide commited by the Spaniards on the indians of Central America/Mexico.
"Democracy" as we know it will not reign in Iraq in our lifetime.

That's an interesting question. Of course, no one can answer it with any kind of qualification unless, you use the crusades for a baseline.
As far as mission accomplished; it was. Being nice guys, we stayed and tried to help (having a base there wouldn't be bad either) not understanding the complexities of the region or religion we have been getting screwed ever since.
We don't think like, live like, believe like, or eat like them. We should know by now, we don't need to be there with them. Saddam is gone, we should be gone.
I Think it's the curse of the United States, we have to help other nations until we kill them.

It's possible. There's Democracies in Lebanon and Egypt both of which have many looney Muslim citizens.

No, he won't. He was pandering to the Conservative Right the whole time, and I think he was hoping someone would stop him before they come back here and kill the rest of us.
