It's really quite a round range. In some REALLY NICE privates, the price is as high as 10,000 a semester. In some others, like in smaller towns, and some Christian schools, it's alot more like 3,000 a year. Plus you have to count all kinds of things like scholarships, so it's really not a fixed thing. I'd call the guidence office of whichever school you're considering to get an estimate.

The high school I graduated from is now charging around $35,000 a year, not including extra fees for people who want to board their horses, study abroad, take private riding lessons, etc. But I also have cousins attending a small Christian school for only about $4500 a year each. So the range is enormous.

Keep in mind that most private prep schools and many parochial schools now offer need-based financial aid, making private educations MUCH more affordable. My high school tuition technically cost a fortune, but my parents didn't pay a penny--when I was admitted to the school I was given a grant that covered all my tuition and fees. Other families received grants partially covering their tuition, depending on how great their financial aid was. So even if you're in the middle (not rich enough to afford tuition, but not poor either) you may qualify for financial aid.

My kid's private school is $25,000ish a year, but as people have pointed out there's a very wide variety, depending on the area, type of school, perhaps even the grade level, etc.
