The Maldives are made up of 1200 small islands... my friend is there at the moment.

Lots of nations have 1,000 or more islands, but since you ask "made up of 1000 islands," that imples to me that countries on a continental mainland (like Croatia, the US or Canada) are excluded.

So, Indonesia, Philipine, and the Maldives are all correct; there are probably south Pacific nations that will count as well.

There are several countries with a significant number of islands (Indonesia, Phillipines, Maldives, Malaysia, United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, United Kingdom, etc). However, only ONE country is referred to as "the country of the thousand islands".

That country is Croatia.

I believe it is Indonesia. It is the country with the highest number of islands in the world.

My mistake, it isn't Indonesia. This country has 18,110 islands and not 1000.

National Geographic Magazine in 2005 named Croatia as the most beautiful country in the world. Croatia offshore, has more than 1,000 islands varying in size.
