Yes, it has already been done. There was an article published last year about it. Using satellite images from Google Maps and Google Earth, an Italian man found the remains of an ancient villa. The article illustrates the image that he used to infer a buried archaeological site.

In October 2006, there was an article(s) about a Univ. of North Carolina prof who is using Google Earth to find ancient ruins in France after reading about the Italian man's discovery. The prof is quoted:-"I've spent 25 years in this region of France," Madry said. "In the whole time, I've found a handful of archaeological sites. I found more in the first five, six, seven hours than I've found in years of traditional field surveys and aerial archaeology."

Don't know if the resolution would be high enough for seeing the trench's and areas where land has been filled after the collapse of a building or wall, possibly for more ancient areas where the land itself was molded to form a fortress or protective structure. But would need to investigate the history of an area first to give you a starting point for potential sites. good luck with your search, interesting question

if ur asking whether u can see from the FREE version, thin chance. u have to look hard, but google will show indications about the wherebouts of ancient roman villas. u can see only like vague images. not so clear, unless ur using the PREMIUM version, where u have to pay money.
but none the less its good. i could see oil rigs in India, plus my home town too.

I have a feeling the resolution will not be high enough to make anything out?
