They derive from Romans mostly who themselves were Greeks who settled in Italy and people indiginous to the country(tribes). However, Rome was founded by other people from Greece who learned many things from an old civilization settled in Northern Italy who was attacked by Romans centuries later. As Rome Grew, the different cities joined it more or less peacefully. It took 650 hundred years before Ceasar appeared. Rome was a republic. Ceasar earned a huge popularity in Rome people but not among the senators who feared that he wanted to be an Emperor. He was killed by many of them and his death caused the republic of Rome to be instable and become and empire (after a civil war). Rome as an Empire, had a professionnal army and was a people of builders who conquered nearby countries. It was the firts city to reach a population of one million citizens... London had such a population during 19th century. Rome built roads, canals, big buidings and stadiums.

Italy was populated by indoeuropean people (caucasian for your studies) in the 3500 A.C.
The first important italian people were Celtics in the north and Etruscans in the centre of the country, then, a lot of other people went here: Greeks, Romans, Germans, Goths (Ostrogots and Visigots) Longobards, Francs, Normans, Arabs and so on.
What's are our descendents? Boh.

Italians are the people of Italy. They are descendants of Romans, Etruscans, Goths, Lombards, Germans, Greeks, Helvetics and other peoples that either settled in Italy, or where brought there by conquest.
