how does music being sorted into gene rs?

i mean i'm finding out that music has been sorted into geners.
like rock,hiphop,metal,etc..
and i don't know how can i defferentiate between each kind of music?
plz help me out

You need to broaden your listening a little bit. Knowing the genres will help you figure them out. Look at the bands in any particular genre and see what their sound has in common. :-)

ooh good quetion..i wonder that myself..so i dont know the answer though its obvious with hip hop and rock or country lol ..but what about alternative, indie, port hardcore...
