If I've heard the recent quotes on this correctly we're talking about what would amount to changing the race of a well established character. There hasn't been a suggestion that a Puff Daddy wants to white up I don't think. So in terms of Bond: the character - based on a series of books written over 50 years ago - is famous for looking a certain way (hence the outcry against "blonde Bond" Daniel Craig) and being a certain nationality and race. There shouldn't be a black Bond any more than there should be a black Superman or remake of Shaft starring Jude Law.

Except for Michael Jackson's later period in life, don't be silly, but as a previous poster has pointed out a white guy has played Jesus. And the flip side Michael Clarke Duncan, a "black guy", did play the classic evil white role Kingpin in Daredevil so anything is possible.

Not only is James Bond a made up character, as opposed to the others you suggest, the name (someone may correct me here) is a pseudonym in the Ian Fleming series created by the Secret Service so different people can adopt the persona therefore meaning any race can play him, are people suggesting that a "black person" can't attain the rank of Commander in the Navy. This may have been invented by the film makers at the time Roger Moore took over the character to smooth the transition, or something I just made up!

James Bond is a fictional character, he could be any colour. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Muhammed Ali, Michael Jackson. these guys are real, ( not sure about MJ though)

A white woman could play Michael Jackson now!!! Only kidding!!!

The James Bond character came from books and the books would have described how he looked. If the books didn't describe Bond as being a black guy then no, a black guy shouldn't play Bond. No a white guy couldn't play any of the above people.

Some may argue though that because Bond is a fictional character, they could make him what they want which is true. Thats not so easy to do with real people.

If a role needs to be specifically played by a black person as with the real people you mentioned (and Michael Jackson) then of course they should be black but James Bond is ficticious and there isn't anything about his character that says he has to be specifically played by a white actor.

What about Shakespeare? There are loads of black actors who've played Shakespeare when the part wasn't specific to skin colour. That's never caused a problem that I know of. Why should Bond be any different?

Maybe it would have been a better phrased question if the black examples you used were Spawn, Shaft, Blade and Xander Cage Those characters are originally black men. In the case of Xander Cage, two different black men, Vin Diesel and Ice Cube.

and if you put it that way, I would say yeah why not?

But I do not want a black man playing John F. Kennedy, FDR or Richard Nixon so I would not want a white man playing Malcom X, MLK, etc.

And just about anyone, man, woman, white black, could play Michael Jackson.. lol Does it matter in that case?? lol

That's not fair considering those were real people, and James Bond is a fictional character. It's kinda like the whole issue with what color was Christ. Many people believe him to be white, because of pictures they grew up seeing, yet in the bible it states his skin was like copper and hair like wool, so why do they always have a Caucasian Man playing Christ?

It depends on whether one wishes use the character created by the author or just trade on the name to generate revenue.
Why not go the whole hog and have a black Muslim James Bond who does not find women attractive? Instead of working for MI5, he could work for the ISI (Pakistan Secret Service) and have his orange juice on the rocks shaken, not stirred. He would not be Ian Fleming's James Bond but it would doubtless keep some of the PC brigade happy.

It wouldn't look ok to have a white guy play one of them, because those people are real (unlike James Bond)...

Bond never existed, as a fictional character he could very well have black skin, I mean why not ;)
