I like my job and most of the people i work with. However, i get paid peanuts for what (i think) i am worth. Our salesmen are always giving me compliments on how much of a great job i am doing and they even mention it to the owner of the company, but still all i get is criticism from Pam (my FEMALE boss). I have a 16 month old daughter and i need to make at least 3 dollars more. I know that i probably won't get that much of a raise but i need at least a dollar. Our year-end-review is coming up and I need to know how to prepare myself for her negative attitude towards me and i need to know a proffesional way of asking for a raise even if her feedback on me is negative.

Revise your resume to include what you have learned since you have started the job, what you have done to benefit the company, bring it with you and describe why you feel you deserve a raise during the review process. Remember, this is like the initial interview when you're selling yourself (your skills, the things you've done to benefit the company) to get a raise. Make it a very formal resume on nice paper.

You usually have the right to dispute negative feed back with the HR department. Hopefully it won't come to this. What type of criticism do you usually receive? Is it for little, petery things or the occasional error that every human makes? Or do you make frequent big blunders? Do you usually engage her criticisims and argue with her, or do you nod and say yes ma'am, I'll remember to do xyz next time?

Is it your boss, directly, that authorizes raises? Or is it the HR department? Or another person all together? You need to find out who you actually need to speak to about receiving a raise. Usually, in big corporate environments, your boss does nothing other than provide feedback on why you do or do not deserve a raise, they do not directly authorize it.

Your boss is probably scared you will be coming after her job. I am sure she hears all the great compliments you receive, or at least hears of them. She could just be a little jealous. When it comes review time, I would just tell her, this is what I provide to the company and I feel I have earned at least $1 per hr raise. Then tell her why you deserve the raise, don't talk about your baby and needing the money, just tell her what you bring to the company. If she gives you negative feedback, then I would ask her to expand on the feedback, let you know why she feels that way and what she thinks you need to do to improve. Sometimes in order to get what you want, you have to feed their ego first. Good Luck.
