Why is it that many reports of crime do not specify race of the criminal? Would it be racist to report the attacker was black? or should it be assumed they are white due to population-race percentage?

All English Crime reports taken by any police authority have a section on Ethnicity. Not sure about Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This is for government statistics as well as police reporting.

This goes for any suspect, witness, victim or person reporting.

If these are not answered by the witness, any suspect is asked in custody how they would class themselves, if of cause they are in any fit state to answer. If not or they refuse the custody record states Not stated and the Custody PS takes a note of how they appear to look, IE the old system of IC1, 2, 3 etc, but this has been updated.

The press does not as a rule publish if a person's race unless it has a bearing on the case.

No, it would not be racist to report them as "black" (if indeed they were, if not this would be extremely racist and a misrepresentation of the facts and any court case would be thrown out automatically, if a witness said they were "black" and they were white), However further questions would need to be asked IE are they Asian appearance, Afro-Caribbean etc.
Equally it should it be assumed that they were "Caucasians" due to population race percentage, indeed in many areas there are places where "Caucasians" are in the minority.

It wouldn't be PC would it? I mean if he/she is black and they say a black male/female, aged whatever, with approx. weight at XXX lbs and standing X'XX"... this would make it easier because it gives people more information than if they don't tell you the race.

It wouldn't be racist. It would be a fact that the person is of that race!! A fact!!! And people answer here saying race doesn't matter and it only fuels racial hatred. People should be able to hear who is doing what instead of living this fantasy life where everyone is equal and all those who attempt to show the truth are shouted down as racist. It's not racist to know all the facts about criminals!!!! Screw political correctness and it's followers.

Because it's not important to you reading the news.
But you better believe it's in the police report. And all the ensuing statistical databases. Check out the CDC's website if you want to see what I mean, it's all there, broken down by race, gender, age, etc. Just the facts.

One's race or skin colour has nothing to do with one's inclination to break the law. The idea is to stop racial stereotypes. Anyone can be a criminal, whether they're black, white, brown or purple. It's a question of morals, not melanin.

Wierd question. you sound like a lot of people i know. If a crime is committed the first thing they want to know is the person's colour. If the newspapers haven't said what colour the person is yet they say ' i'll bet it was a black person'.

He's right why would it matter? Humans/anyone is capable of anything we have free will choice, and sometimes we make wrong choices and sometimes right. So why would it matter what race?
