This will be my second pregnancy and I had to be induced with the last one as well as with this one. They have already tried everything else. It hurt so bad last time with the pitocin and was wondering if I could request the epidural before the pitocin? Has anyone ever heard of this?

I know that it is to speed up labor, this is not my first child, I just wanted to know if anyone has requested an epidural first and if they would do it. I had pitocin in my last labor and it hurt so bad really fast.

I had a c-section almost 4 months ago and they gave me pitocin and inserted my catheter all before I got my spinal. I asked them if they could at least wait to do the catheter after I had the spinal and they said no.

Good luck. Maybe this labor won't be as bad as the first. They say that first babies usually take longer, so maybe this one will go faster.

Usually pitocin is to get the ball rolling and an epi is for after everything has started. My labors were usually 6-8 hours after pitocin till birth. If yours are 2 hours or less, they might give it soon after the pitocin, but I'm not sure. Pitocin might have hurt just because it sped things up so much. Labor is gonna hurt anyways. I have a friend that delivered so quickly that there just wasn't time. But since it usually takes many hours, I don't see them doing an epi first. Ask your doctor, you never know.

Yes, you can have the epidural before the pitocin. I had mine that way. Actually (at least at my hospital) that's how they usually handle it. Since pitocin causes stronger contractions sooner the epidural helps with the pain. Plus, I believe, once contractions start an epidural cannot be started. Anyway. I hope that helps. Take care.

No. They won't give you the epidural first. Sometimes it can cancel out the pitocin and stop labor. That is what the nurses told me when I was induced with my daughter. They want to wait until you get to a certain point of progression before they give you the epidural.
Good luck!!

You can not have the epidural first because the pain meds may wear out before you actually go into hard labor.
I was induced with all 6 of my children. I suggest that you wait untill they tell you they are going to break your water. Ask them for the epidural RIGHT BEFORE you let them break your water. This will help a lot. This is when the contractions really become unbareable so if you have it in place as they break your water it will take the edge off.
If you get numbness on one side, and nothing on the other be prepared to ask for another bolus of the pain meds and make sure to lean TOWARDS the leg that needs the meds. They sometimes don't tell you of this trick.

Good Luck!

That occurred to me. I requested for the epidural at the same time as the contractions were basically too a lot to undergo and at the same time as my labour replaced into no longer progessing as they needed it to, they all started me on pitocin. It replaced right into a very painful journey for me, as my epidural did not take and that i felt the Pitocin contractions for the time of.

No, you can't have the epidural until you reach at least 3 cm, and most hospital's require 4 cm. You wouldn't be that far dialated if you are being induced. Good Luck though!

No, because they have to make sure the pitocin is going to work before they give you any pain meds.

I had them both and I was cool until I pushed the baby out. I don't think they affect each other. My friend also had both and she was cool
