His neck and knees are a mess and don't allow him to perform up to the level that he'd like so he walked away. He's said it's possible that he could come back for the odd match in the future (the big rumour was a match with Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 23 but that's not going to happen) but it isn't too likely.
Now he's focused on acting. He recently finished filming "The Condemned" for WWE Films which will be released in early 2007.

Austin revealed in an interview he was considering acting. Austin went on to face JBL in a beer drinking contest at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event in March 2006 which went to a no-contest when Austin saw JBL cheating by pouring the beer down his clothes. Austin gave a stunner to JBL and then celebrated with the Stone Cold beer salute. Austin then inducted Bret "The Hitman" Hart into the WWE Hall Of Fame on April 1, 2006.
After WrestleMania, Austin went to Australia to film the WWE produced film The Condemned. He has since returned to the U.S and will continue making sporadic WWE appearances.

The 2 answers above me are semi correct, he did beat up his wife. His knees are in bad shape and is not letting him wrestle. He does make appearances every now and then. A couple of years ago he signed a contract with WWE to make 5 movies for them. So far he's only done one which is The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler.

He has bad knee's which means he's hardly there but now he's doing movies like the Longest Yard and he's just made another film called The Condemned

Well after him and Debra got together and h ebeat the crap out of her when he came back to wrestling he wasnt very liked and I have heard NYTHING FROM HIM SINCE THEN.
