Last night me and my partner were fast asleep when at 1am he woke me up saying to get up quick as there was a fire downstairs! I could hear the crackling noise a fire makes when its spitting! I looked out the window to where he had just been looking and a bright orange light hurt my eyes (like when you first wake up and the lights are switched on) Although it didint appear to look like flames just bright orange light! I went downstaors to where my partner already was just letting the dogs outside - there was nothing there -no fire - the dogs bark at everything - even lights and they hadn't made a sound!?The kittens didnt look disturbed and they sleep in the room below us?!Our neighbour was hanging out her window as she had been woken too although when we mentioned we thought it was fire she said 'no'-she didn't know what it was but was sure it wasn't fire!? And asked if it had gone next door.My partner took the dogs and walked up our lane-nothing!? I cant sleep till i know what it was?

This sounds typically like ball lightning - a name that has been coined for this type of phenomenon is "earth lights".

Earth lights are a rare anomalous light phenomenon, mistaken throughout history as dragons, UFOs, and ball lightning before being recognised as a separate category. One leading theory is that they are produced by tectonic strain in minor fault lines, so that they are literally generated by the earth.

In America they've been called "spooklights" or "ghost lights" since at least the 1950s, but Persinger and Lafrenière were the first scientists to recognise the phenomenon, in the late 1970s. The lights were renamed and brought to wider public attention by Paul Devereux in 1982 with his publication "Earth Lights".

They appear in many colours, shapes, and sizes, though the basketball-sized globular orange variety seems most common. Most sightings occur at night, when some lights can be seen from miles around. They're reported to be able to move against the wind and reach extraordinary speeds. Their terrestrial nature means that though many sightings are sporadic, there are some locations where they appear relatively often. It's through studying these hotspots, such as Hessdalen in Norway and the Engligh Pennines, that their characteristics become evident.

Ball lightning reportedly takes the form of a short-lived, glowing, floating object often the size and shape of a basketball, but it can also be golf ball sized or smaller. It is sometimes associated with thunderstorms, but unlike lightning flashes arcing between two points, which last a small fraction of a second, ball lightning reportedly lasts many seconds. There have been some reports of production of a similar phenomenon in the laboratory, but some still disagree on whether it is a real phenomenon.

Reports
Ball lightning discharges were once thought to be extremely rare occurrences, [1] but recent research shows that a few percent of the US population have been witnesses.[citation needed] Surveys have been taken of eyewitness accounts by at least 3000 people.[citation needed]

Ball lightning is photographed very rarely, and details of witness accounts can vary widely. Many of the properties observed in ball lightning accounts conflict with each other, and it is very possible that several different phenomena are being incorrectly grouped together. It is also possible that some photos are fakes.

The discharges reportedly appear during thunderstorms, sometimes issuing from a lightning flash, but large numbers of encounters reportedly occur during good weather with no storms within hundreds of miles.

Ball lightning reportedly tends to float (or hover) in the air and take on a ball-like appearance. Its shape has been described as spherical, ovoid, teardrop, or rod-like with one dimension being much larger than the others. The longest dimension reported is between fifteen and forty centimeters. Many are red to yellow in color, sometimes transparent, and some contain radial filaments or sparks. Other colors, such as blue or white occur as well.

Sometimes the discharge is described as being attracted to a certain object, and sometimes as moving randomly. After several seconds the discharge reportedly leaves, disperses, is absorbed into something, or, rarely, vanishes in an explosion.

It could have been a meteroite. I know this may sound far fetched but it isn't, millions fall to earth everyday. I have seen one in a meteor shower that I heard as well as it was so low and that was a crackly hissing noise and a bright orange ball, probably only small but still big enough to see and hear. That shot over my head really quick and was amazing so could have been that, What a lucky thing you are to have witnessed that, A shooting star as they're better known!!!

It might have been a ball of lightning. Lightning balls have been known to roll on the ground for several seconds and be of different colors, such as white, yellow , red or orange. Lightning balls can roll on the ground for several seconds beforsimply disapating. They are bright and make crackling noises as they "roll".
