I have a 1997 Vauxhall Astra van (diesel) and in the last couple of days a loud knocking sound is coming from the engine when i accelerate. The engine idles fine without any noises but as soon as you put your foot on the accelerator the noise begins and get faster as the speed picks up, but as soon as you stop accelerating the noise stops. It had an MOT a week ago and nothing was said about any possible problems with the engine at that time.

That sure sounds like a wrist pin or a rod bearing to me. For sure it`s tear down time.

Hi matey when that happened to my N reg Astra (again a diesel) and 2 weeks later my head gasket went and cost my over #750 to get repaired. Best advice is to get a qualified engineer or specialist to look it over

You need to verify the noise to see if it does it in park when fuel is applied if it does then it is more than likely a fuel knock, however if it doesnt then I would suggest draining the oil and seeing if there are any metal shavings on the plug

in case you sense it in the guidance wheel have the cv joints checked.( the knuckle in the the two stress shafts that enable the front wheels swivel.) they could make what may appear corresponding to a knocking noise whilst they get wiped out.
