In case the HD has a virus, I put a spare HD - same thing happens. Also happens with no HD hooked up.

Does the computer boot at all? It not, you might have a problem with your motherboard, or some other hardware. If you don't know how to troubleshoot, I suggest taking it to a professional.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

UN install the driver, turn computer off UN plug key board then plug it in turn computer on. computer will install a new driver.
