In 1978 when Richard Donner and Gene Hackman made Superman: The Movie, Lex was still a Criminal mastermind.

In the Mid-1980's the comic book revised the back story and made Lex the Billionaire son of a criminal mastermind. Or just a plain old Trump -like Billionaire. But the Film Franchise had been established with Lex as a Criminal, so they rolled with it and did not reset their continuity.

Since Brian Singer, ignored Superman 3 & 4, and made Superman returns as a sequel to Superman 2, he followed that story with Lex as Criminal, however he had Lex marry a rich old woman, and inherit her wealth, setting up Kevin Spacey's Lex to be the Evil Billionaire in future installments(if needed) while keeping to the continuity of Superman 1 & 2.

One needs to remember that only the basics continue from one medium to another, not the whole picture. You cannot draw a single solid line of continuity from 1938 in Action Comics to 2006 on DVD. It just doesn't work. Every medium adjusts the myth to their needs. and every decade or so even the comic books reset the clock, and rewrite the back story and events to date.

Lex started as a mad scientist, evolved into a Criminal mastermind, and then to a billionaire(with varying sources for that money), and even for a while US President. In the years to come he will be changed to fit the needs of the medium in which he appears.

Dude, youre NOT gonna see it in Smallville.
THe TV show is totally unrelated to the movies and the comic book. They dont tie into eaach other at all.
Lex and Clark were never friends before going to Metropolis in the comics. And Lex and Lana NEVER got it on. And there was no Chloe, and Pete Ross wasnt black.

As for the movies, apparently theres no mention of LEx's millions or Lexcorp.

Smallville is totally out there, but its interesting. Almost like a television version of DC Comics' "Elseworlds" issues

In the DC Universe, Lex Luthor is BROKE due to events in "Our Worlds At War". After one year later, the evil Luthor has begun to become what he origninated before the Crisis of Infinite Earths (a very mad and evil scientist).

On Smallville, he is the rich millionaire (just like in the Post Crisis).

On Superman Returns (in which I haven't seen yet), It seems like the Pre-Crisis, an evil scientist because Returns begins after the end of the Superman II movie. There's you're answer.

Maybe his old man (lionel) screws him over and steals most of the cash before snuffing it, leaving his fortune to a cat sanctuary. Lex then decides to use whats left to run a real estate scam, putting california into the sea (superman 1) and gets caught, being put in prison. Then the old biddy helps him get out of prison and we come to the start of Returns.

Luthor and Superman are literally not opposites yet opponents. even as Superman arrives, Luthor already owns city. he's a corrupt businessman, and something that receives in his way he crushes. Now alongside comes Superman, larger in each and every way besides the undeniable fact that those that make Luthor a rigidity to be reckoned with: mind and funds. yet what Luthor won't be able to make sure, won't be able to even imagine, is that Superman's intelligence is more effective than a journey for him. That farmer boy scout attitude has him thoroughly fooled. extra awesome nonetheless, Superman did not look to favor anybody or something, and that protected funds. like quite a few helpful guy, the first ingredient he tried replaced into to apply Supes like quite a few pawn. even as that did not artwork, he tried to apply Kryptonian DNA, first by creating Bizarro, a less than excellent clone, then by combining the DNA consisting of his personal to create Superboy. Neither mission proved in besides controllable. To Lex Luthor, this meant purely one ingredient: this city's not sufficiently enormous for the both one individuals. In different words, if you're actually not gonna help, get outta my way. Supes does not get out of how, so Lex made it his mission to ruin him. What i'm putting forward is, it replaced into Lex Luthor's personal ambition that made him Superman's most suitable enemy. Lex had to be decision a million in city, yet he might want to continually are available in second with Superman round. Edit: i does not pay a lot heed to activities from the Smallville series. it really is in holding with a tale from 1960 that had Lex as Superboy's chum until eventually he lost all his hair and blamed Superboy for it. because the 1980 reboot, although, Clark as Superboy replaced into written out of heritage. purely as in Superman the action image, both did not meet until eventually Superman's occupation began in city, even as Clark moved there to grow to be a reporter. there's a tale about Lex and Clark assembly as little ones, a very good one done not lengthy formerly the recent reboot, besides the undeniable fact that that is little more effective than a footnote in Luthor's existence, not something existence-replacing. As for Batman, he remains friends with Superman, with the further stipulation that he keeps possession of Kryptonite in case Supes ever loses administration. A backup plan, because it were. confident, he might want to instruct his most suitable foe if it ever got here all the way down to it, because it has on party, yet you won't be able to call him an enemy, extra of an uneasy best chum.

In the last movie Lex Luthor and his henchmen were captured by Superman and sent to prison. In Returns, the only reason Luthor got out was because he sent in his appeals trying to get either his sentence reduced or erased. Accoding to law, the individual who puts another in jail must show up to that court date, and because Superman was gone, Luthor was set free. When in prison, his assets were frozen and he lost everything, outside the fact that Superman kept foiling his plans and that too costs a pretty penny...So inevitably, Superman was the one that made him poor, regardless if it was sending him to prison or defeating all his evil schemes...
