On a new computer, how do I add items to my desktop? Thank you?

Right click the desktop and select properties. Open the desktop tab. Hit customise desktop then tick the items you want. Press OK and your icons will be back!

Like a shortcut? Right click on the Desktop and go to New-->Shortcut and follow the directions.
