I think the estimate of 3-5 years is a bit high. I think 2.5 to 3 years is more realistic in most cases. Occasionally you'll have a rat that lives quite a bit longer. I've had 5 rats so far, and they all died between 2.5 and 3 years except one. Our last rat is 3.5 now. I rarely hear of a rat making it past 4. They tend to have lot of health problems when they get older. The site listed below has a lot of well-researched info on rat biology.

Average is 2 - 3 years. Pretty good is 4 years, and exceptional is 5 years! 11 human days equals 1 rat year, so you work out the math!

The one our grandkids had was very well taken care of and lived just over three years. I think 2 to 3 years is average. These sites have some information on the topic. I hope this helps.

I have been told that they live until they are about 4 years old. Depending on how old it was when you got it, if it's a baby, you're looking at about 4-5 years. Unless of course they get sick or get tumors, which, rats are succeptible to getting. Anyways, hope I helped. :)
