Because they commit more crimes. A better question would be, why do minorities commit more crimes? The answers to that question are complex.

Urbanization. Minorities, flock to urban areas to find work. Many do not find work so they turn to crime. At least that was how it used to be. Crime is fast easy money. A criminal can make a lot of money, until he is caught. In this day turning to a life of crime is a conscience decision, they will be caught. I once had a non-minority criminal ask me "office why are you a cop? Are you lazy or afraid to steal". At the time I found it funny. You see I made a grand total of $24000.00 per year back then and that included overtime. He made $70,000.00 the previous year. Now he was a third time felon so he was automatically going to have to serve a minimum of 10 years in prison . Now if you do the math that breaks down to less than 7 thousand per year. Of course as he pointed out, free food, TV, clothing, recreation, and anything you wanted could be had in prison. I will take the $24,000.00 per year, peace of mind, freedom to travel, and twenty year retirement anyday.

I agree with the poverty aspect but it also extends to another reason. If you are poor you cannot afford good legal counsel. I am sure there are (some, somewhere) good court appointed lawyers, but they are overwhelmed with their case logs.
There are plenty of non-minority people that have committed serious crimes that are not in prison simply because they had the money (and property to use as collateral) to hire a great legal defense. A minority person with money can buy the same defense and get the same results (do the intitials O.J. ring a bell)? Its all about the money.

Because as minorities, it means by default they are immigrants. Recent immigrants at that. Newly immigrated people are for obvious reasons the poorest in society. Poor people have more necessity, and more opportunity to commit crime. It just so happens there are more poor minorities (as a percentage of their total prsence within their adopted country) than the majority - therefore more minorities in prison.
You could also argue that its a self-perpetuating cycle as racism does have a part to play - on the part of police, judges, and juries which are nearly always comprised almost entirely of the majority, for obvious reasons.

I hate the word minority because if you really think about anyone who is not white is called a minority. Yet white people are the minority because there are more minorities than white people, so of course minority groups will have the highest population in almost everything.

I think, unfortunately, we are still dealing with poverty, education and lack of opportunity for many rather than a choice because of race---its what will change who and actually how many people are in prisontoo. And afterwards- Opportunity needs to be given- no one wants to be a bad guy (or girl)
