Personal opinion only .... I think it has to do with nurturing and fostering. Their children are grown up and probably living far away so they don't see their children or grandchildren often. The garden gives them something to take care of - something depends on them for well being, helps them feel needed and productive.

I'm not old but i do love lots of land and gardens...it gives you tranquility and peace...you don't always have someone looking at you and prying into your business with lots of land , and a garden is a means of both expressing your artistic side as well as ensuring something to eat. Its quite unfortunate that the youth of today have been completely brainwashed into believing that the city is the way to live, with chemical deserts and frozen dinners Maybe the Old people cant understand why you would want to eat the government crap and be couped up in the city like lab rats at the governments mercy.
They do it for Independence as well

i do no longer understand the place you reside, yet in maximum areas in the USA it particularly is virtually wintry climate and the top of transforming into season. I actual have linked some links the place you may get flora and seeds on line or with the aid of a catalog. I actual have used the Gurneys in the previous, they're distinctly good. They now deliver me a catalog each 12 months. save your nickles, and via next spring you've adequate to reserve some seeds or flora. you're able to do some analyzing over the wintry climate too, some flora could nicely be planted before than others, some like complete solar, jointly as others do extra helpful in partial shade. in the USA we've broken up areas called zones, and seed applications should help understand if that's a solid plant on your zone or no longer. Gardening takes a great form of time, pulling out weeds, watering, and upkeep, yet you sound rather trustworthy in desirous to do it! i like it, it provides me some rather time, and something to do like a interest, however the top effect are the culmination of your hard paintings.

Hey, wait a minute! I'm not old and I like gardening!
I think it gives people a sense of peace to work with the land and help things grow. It's relaxing, and you get to play in dirt.
It also gives a sense of accomplishment, particularly if you eat what you grow.

We feel a sense of gratitude and accomplishment to see something u work so hard to plant, nurture, and watch it grow in to a beautiful work of God's art. It's soothing and relaxing. And as for land it gives u a sense of ownership and pride to keep or make something richer than it was for our future generations to enjoy. Most don't care and sell the property that someday will make them rich because of greed or some unforeseen circumstance which I wouldn't have sold it for under pressure. So the future loses.

They're getting acquainted with dirt because they're going to be six feet under it soon? That was just mean, I wasn't being serious. I think they enjoy the peace and beauty of a garden, just as any age group does.

It does make them happy, because it's a hobby for them. The older set's usually stuck at home, and gardening is something that can keep them occupied.

The benefits are definitely there for older people who maintain their land. However, a large number of them move into condominiums as they don't want to become slaves to their lawn and would rather be doing other things now that the kids are gone. Just look at the huge Florida condo complexes as evidence.
