When cold, dry Arctic air meets warm, moist tropical air the results is a loud thunderstorm.This sudden mixing of these two extreme types of air causes a mass of pressure which also cause the bang from the lightning.

Heat (obviously from the sun), and loads of moisture. Hurricanes are spectacular examples.
The meeting of hot and cold fronts are also 'good' conditions for storms...with lots of moisture too.
