It is desirable to have at least 512 MB of RAM or more to run today's OS and applications smoothly. Increasing the RAM reduces the I/O reads of your hard disk for data to be read and written from the swap file. It will definately increase the perfromance of your PC. However, RAM is not the only thing due to which your PC might be slow. There can be many more resaons - too many background programs running on your PC, defragmented hard disk, a large prefetch file in the windows directory, too many temp files, spyware programs, firewall, anti-virus programs etc.

Firstly dude no one will understand u r questin.Secondly what u want is most reasonable RAM acceptable. So for 1.6 Ghz 128 Mb RAM is good as u said no downloading(u r freak, since no one is there who won't download anything) . Also for 2.4 Ghz u need 256 Mb RAM minimum.Just remember basics,i.e.,how much normal u work minimum is the above i suugested. But if u make additional installations like antivirus, wallpapers, games, etc. u will need minimum of 256 Mb RAM........GOT IT....(no downloading....hehehehehe)
