Most shops will be closed from Christmas Eve until 29th December (if Christmas Day and Boxing Day falls on a weekend then Australia declares the next two working days as a public holiday) and then again on January 3rd. http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au/info.cfm?top=259&pg=2183&cID=84

Here is a list of what is on in Melbourne on New Years Eve http://www.newyearseveguide.com.au/?gclid=CLCpjNHXzIgCFUQDGAod5gaxng

A Phillip Island tour would be good http://www.phillipisland.net.au/trip/bustour1/bustour1.html. A walk around St Kilda is also interesting. This may also give you ideas http://www.seemelbournecard.com/pages_menuitems/attractions.html

Shopping hours in Melbourne are very open. The shops will be open on New Years Day. The only days the shops really close are Good Friday and Christmas Day.

New Years Eve - in Melbourne the most popular thingt to do is go to the city and line the banks of the Yarra River and watch the fireworks. It is quite nice if the weather is good (it often rains on new years eve but last year was 40 degrees so you never really know).

You can follow that up with going to one of many of Melbourne's bars, nightclubs, restaurants or cafes in the lively areas like Chapel St, Lygon St, the Docklands or St Kilda.

I would not recommend going to somewhere like Phillip Island or the Surf Coast for New Years because these places get ridiculously crowded that time of the year, and the traffic getting there and back from Melbourne is absolutely terrible.

Most shops should be open on Dec 30. Dec 31 is a Sunday, so some smaller stores will be closed, but the major department stores and chains will be open. January 1st is a public holiday. I think some government departments will take January 2nd as well. January is generally a holiday period, so melbourne will be quieter than normal, and some of the small speciality shops may take the opportunity to have a break in the first week of two of the month, but in general it will only be the day of Jan 1 when you should expect most places will be closed.

rather this would be a very stable time to commute. it relatively is slightly chilly finding on the place you're going, yet no longer too undesirable. My advice would be to pass north (Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia). So try Kakadu , Uluru, the great Barrier Reef etc the days would be many times friendly - often sunny, no longer overly moist (there is a few rain in spite of the undeniable fact that it relatively is constrained for the duration of winter and heavy in summer season) and approximately 20 degree celsius on the Brisbane point (hotter greater suitable north) throughout the day. The nights are cool, you will need finished pants and a jumper / pull over / jacket yet you will no longer choose 10 pairs of thermal underclothes and sufficient jackets to maintain you heat as in case you have been going to the Antarctic. the backside one - July - shows Cairns for July, all bar 2 days have not have been given any rain or decrease than 3 millimetres - in comparison to January the place the worry-free became the double digit discern in June!, temps throughout the day are in the 20 degree plus celsius and at nighttime extreme little ones or 20 degree celsius.

Depends on what kind of shops you're after. They never seem to bloody close here - always open to take your money. Christmas day they will close but most will open the next day for the "Boxing Day Sales".
