If the question is an example of Irish humor, I'd say it could use tweaking.
An example would be helpful, signed American Grandma B.
And am I understanding that Irish refer to all American's as "Yankeys"? Because Yankeys are only the American's born in the Northern Part of America.

Irish-Americans share it, to a large extent.
People who live where there are large concentrations of Irish-Americans also get it, though it may not be their personal form of humour.
US Jews from the old vaudevillian era of humour enjoy it and adopted parts.
You've got, Chicago, New York City, Boston (and most of New England) either laughing or scowling, because they get it.
Don't look for laughs, West of the Mississippi, among Scandinavian-Americans (who are rumoured to laugh, but only at Garrison Keillor), or among African-Americans (whose own humour is very distinct, and varies by region, but does not overlap with Irish humour).
Mexican-Americans don't get it. Puerto Ricans don't either. The Far East Asian-Americans of the Pacific Coast have their own humour, too. Frankly, most of that is lost on me.
Humour has always translated poorly, across cultures, and times.

OK first of all we don't all want to be you (meaning european I suppose). Secondly, why're non-americans responding to a posting just for americans, especially to insult?
But FINALLY!!! Man I love the Irish, I want to be one so bad (an example of amUrican humer!!! I seriosly do think ya'll're cool, and if I can understand you practically anything you say's hilarious. The accent gets me everytime, I know it's mean but c'bawn it's so sweet. I was thinking about just moving to Ireland for a couple years, I could pick up the accent maybe even some gaelic if I'm lucky.
And if you're feeling put out, just be glad you're not Mexican because you don't even wanna know how much they crack me up, Telemundo? LMFAO!!!

There's a saying in the States: "There are two types of Irish people: those who are, and those who wish they were." So I guess they like it all right.

I think its great. Back in the 70's we got a t.v. show from an Irishman and he was hilarious. I can't remember his name.

We really use it a lot here in America, it's blended in to our culture. We don't really think anything bad about it! IT's all good!
